Do not make gashes or incisions in one’s flesh in idol-worship over ones dead.
“You shall not gash yourself” Devarim 14:1
Whoever cuts his flesh over his dead violates this prohibition.
Whether he does this by hand or with an instrument.
In idol-worship however if done with an instrument he is punishable by whiplashes if by hand he is free from punishment.
Included in “you shall not gash yourself” is the warning not to separate into groups.
There should not be two religious courts in one city this one following this practice and the other following another practice.
This applies in all places at all times for men and women
